Every time I come to Kuala Lumpur, I spend a lazy morning at Whisk, either lost in a great book or typing frantically on my laptop (as I am now). I can confidently say that Whisk is the best place to come for great coffee – the baristas really know their stuff and can suggest a bean that you will love, while the menu or single origins and blends changes regularly, meaning you can work your way around the world via this globally-loved beverage.
The amazing selection of cakes on offer is not to be turned down. There are tarts, loafs, layer cakes and tortes, each one as good as the last. But it’s the Red Velvet cake that is flying off the cake stand. Proudly marked with a ‘Best Seller’ badge, its glorious ruby red sponge is seducing.
The generous slices of cake are big enough to share (you’ll even be given two forks), but I had no intention of doing so. This delightful treat was all mine!
The plump cocoa sponge is soft and spongey, with a light chocolate flavour and hint of vanilla. The ratio of cake to sweet cream cheese icing is spot on – a light spread, rather than laden with so much buttercream that you can barely taste the sponge and find yourself scraping most of it off. Dare I say that this cake is faultless?
The Villa Galicia filter coffee is a great match for the Red Velvet, so opt for this if it’s on the menu. The clean, light, caramel flavour pairs nicely with the cocoa sponge.
Final word: Dare I say that this Red Velvet cake is faultless? However, I think it’s the popularity of Red Velvet that makes it the best-seller. Try something else and you might surprise yourself – each and every bake here excels. I recommend Whisk’s endearingly named Bub Cake – a fruity banana-pecan cake with peanut butter cream and cream cheese frosting. Each and every cake at Whisk excels.
