Since moving to Clapham, I now have a roster of fantastic cafés and bakeries on my doorstep, but it’s Gail’s Bakery at Clapham Old Town that has become my regular Sunday morning hangout. With its cosy community feel, friendly staff, comfy seating and unfaltering WiFi connection, I often pass an entire morning here, tapping away on my laptop.
The beguiling spread of cakes, pastries, muffins, scones, biscuits and more, arranged in kitsch wooden boxes on the countertop is a wonderful sight, and I have been gradually working my way through the many bakes on offer. But what first brought me to Gail’s Bakery were the cinnamon buns, which I had heard were top notch.
And everyone’s talking about them for a very good reason.
Not stodgy, bready or drowned in sticky icing, Gail’s muffin-shaped cinnamon buns are made with perfect flaky pastry that’s crisp at the top and soft and waxy at the bottom. The warming hum of cinnamon sugar is spread thinly between the layers before baking, and the whole thing gets an extra sprinkling once out of the oven, to give a little crunch on top.
Final word: Perfectly comforting for the colder months; its buttery, crisp and not too sweet. Try dipping it in your cappuccino!
The cinnamon bun: 8/10
