Hot cross buns are one of my favourite sweet treats. Topped with lashings of butter that runs down your hand as you bite into the fruit-packed, sweet, spiced bun, I can never stop at only one. So when I saw the flurry of Instagram posts of Bread Ahead’s hot cross bun-inspired Easter special, I couldn’t resist.
Bread Ahead has transported the flavours of the traditional hot cross bun into its famous doughnuts. Their perfected soft and airy dough is laced with warming mixed-spice, and baked until gloriously golden and crisp, before being rolled in sugar for extra crunch and (over-)filled with silky spiced vanilla custard, robust with cardamon, cinnamon and nutmeg, and flecked with juicy raisins and candied peel. It’s an almost 50/50 ratio of bun to custard – decadence at its best. A pretty little cross crowns the overflowing custard – a nod to the bake that inspired its creation.
Final word: Pure genius
